Previs & Superprevis
Short intro: SUPERPREVIS is trans-continental team of artists working together on joint projects over internet. Our main speciality is creation of PREVIS and SUPERPREVIS.
SUPERPREVIS is a term we coined-up for an advanced previs - one which is designed to such an extent - that it can actually evoke an emotion in viewers. To learn more about what we thought when we came up with word SUPERPREVIS - click in the menu above on “WHAT IS SUPERPREVIS?” submenu.
Our small previs gang was founded by animation/vfx “old-bones” Dragan Stiglic and Dusan Strugar. Who are these guys? Well, just another two unknown artists working hard and around the clock - for the last 2 decades in vfx/animation industry.
Why would someone want to do PREVIS or SUPERPREVIS?
The truth is that we saw many projects running hastily from scripts, across rough storyboards - into full-scale productions. Our impression is that film and television industry dedicates plenty of time to the issues of production - which is relatively logical, but as a result - content values remain relatively neglected.
Go ahead, take a look at many movies out there, and you’ll see how much amazing work is spent on shots, scenes and sequences that don’t actually work : ) Is it possible to help moviemakers, so that their movies will make better communication with the audience? Definitely Yes! it simply requires more planning, more experimentation (trying, failing, trying, succeding) in assembling visuals that need to generate feelings in the audience.
Good idea to battle the planning problem is by early interlinking artists from various areas of future production. We actually started forming a team of experts and artists with common goal to take on task of creating PREVIS and SUPERPREVIS of future entertainment and non-entertainment audio-visual products - being that movies, commercials, games, serious games, or future products.
We are aware that the art and craft of PREVIS and SUPERPREVIS are still not completely recognized as mainstream, but we hope it’s on the way to become mainstream.
There is plenty of great work done in areas of previs, and several companies became famous while creating excellent works of previs for major movie productions: JAK Films, Persistence of Vision, Studio Versailles, N-Visage, etc.
We’d sincerely wish that more work (also time & money) is being spent in the area of preproduction than it is now. At the moment - previs is used to plan all technical aspects of future production. We would like to suggest everyone to continue previs into Superprevis that will prototype an emotional component of the final movie.
In that direction - our small crew focuses on testing the story in audio-visual media, and improving emotional impact of visuals as they are interconnected. There are many great examples of previs out there - exciting camera moves, fluent editing, but most of them somehow seem to have apparent lack of emotion.
We feel it will be good to suggest to each and every producer and studio out there, to start previsualizing their movies in greater detail, and take better care of designing an emotion, value that more often than not has difficulties to rise above overloads of action and visual effects.
At the same time - people who are in command of the creative process can have much more fun to test things when it doesn’t costs much. It’s also easy to involve more people and get more oppinions - when things are in the prototyping stage…
In an essence - we’re not inventing previs, we’re simply suggesting another branch of it, and giving it another name: SUPERPREVIS.
Can we get both creators and audiences more happy with a little bit more work in pre-production? We think that the answer is yes!
